Conversions are the most important metric in measuring a campaign's success. They are a measure of the question: did the visitor take the desired action?

Conversions can be sales, downloads, registrations, many different things to different businesses.


Examples of Conversions

  • Direct sale. - this is the best kind because it gives a very clear idea of how to set CPC.
  • Email registration - note Google frowns on simply harvesting email addresses in exchange for gifts.
  • Signup for an event - a marketing event such as a webinar which can later convert into a sale
  • Trial signup - free trial registration or download that can later lead to a sale


Optimization

Setting up conversion tracking is goal number one. This is the most important metric for a campaign, however it requires additional setup work.

The more closely conversions are tied to actual profits, the better. This allows for accurate bidding and budget allocation.
